Starting Lessons

What should I Wear?

You’ll need an approved riding helmet, low heel boots (paddock boots or tall boots depending on age and preference), long pants (typically riding pants are the most comfortable). Those and other equestrian items can be found locally at Cabin Branch Tack shop in Southern Pines or Barn Door Consignments (gently used). If you wish to shop online, Stateline Tack is a good option.

How Often Should I Take a Lesson?

Once a week is standard for recreation, but twice a week is where most riders see significant progress in muscle memory and confidence. Crown Point does have a limited amount of lesson horses and ponies, so being able to ride more than once a week without your own horse isn’t always possible.

When is the right time to buy or lease our own horse or pony?

There is no "perfect" date on the calendar, but we typically look for a combination of three factors before recommending a purchase:

  • Consistency & Commitment: We generally suggest waiting until the rider is committed to at least two to three lessons per week. Owning a horse is a daily responsibility, and the rider's progress will accelerate significantly when they aren't switching between different school horses. (NOTE: We do have a limited amount of lesson horse/pony slots, so once the rider is ready to commit to two lessons weekly, that may be a strong indicator of taking the next step to leasing or ownership.)

  • Skill Mastery: A rider should be able to walk, trot, and canter with a secure, independent seat and have begun basic work over ground poles or small crossrails. This ensures the rider can safely handle a horse that may be more "forward" or athletic than a seasoned lesson pony.

  • The "Plateau" Phase: When a rider begins to outgrow the capabilities of the school horses—or wants to start competing more seriously at "C" or "A" rated shows—owning or leasing becomes a necessity to reach that next level of performance.

Our Recommendation: Before jumping into a purchase, we often recommend a lease. This allows the rider to experience the "ownership lifestyle" without the long-term financial commitment of a purchase. It’s a great way to "test the waters" and see if your family is ready for the next step.

Note: Because finding the right match is a technical process involving temperament, soundness, and future goals, all horse searches and trials should be coordinated through our training staff to ensure a safe and successful partnership.

We are always happy to discuss a personalized path for your rider. Our team is dedicated to creating a 'Plan for Success' that evolves with your goals—transitioning seamlessly from weekly lessons into leasing and competitive show opportunities. Let’s sit down and discuss where you want this journey to take you.
