How to get started in Leasing or horse ownership

Although you can find horses or ponies for sale almost anywhere, finding the one most suitable for your rider is an entirely different matter.

Crown Point families have the benefit of our expertise and connections within the horse community to make this very important decision and investment a good experience instead of a very expensive mistake. We will locate a mount that best suits your needs and fits your budget.

Leasing a Horse

While in the learning stage our riders need several different levels of horses before finally being able to settle on one, which is why leasing makes so much sense.  Crown Point has been in the business for a long time and over the years has sought out great options to lease for their riders.

Our goal is for our riders to always be learning but to be competitive while doing so. Lease prices for a competitive mount varies widely depending on the calibre from $5k and up per year.   We have a wide array of horses to suit many different levels of riders, nonetheless we sometimes need to search off the farm for the ideal one. Doing so requires us to utilize our network of contacts and dig deep to ensure that the horse is properly represented and is appropriate for our rider.

Crown Point charges a 10% commission in addition to the lease fee for this service, regardless if we find the ideal horse the first time out or spend months with countless trips in search of the right one. We don’t charge a commission for Crown Point owned horses that are leased by our families.

Buying a Horse

This is typically done once you have advanced to a point that you will be able to keep whatever horse you have for a minimum of 2-4 years. Horses that are competitive in our local “C” and “A” show circuit cost anywhere from $15k to $150k. There is a lot that goes into that range of pricing such as: the division they are competing, experience the horse has, age of horse, past success of the horse, among other qualities.

Crown Point charges a commission of an additional 10% of the purchase price for all outside horses. We don’t charge a commission for Crown Point owned horses that are purchased by our families. The commission covers time and money spent networking, researching and visiting horses to find the most suitable and appropriate for our rider.

The Path to Excellence: Why We Prioritize Leasing

At Crown Point, we find that our riders progress with remarkable speed, often moving from Cross Rails to the 2'6" divisions within three to four years. To support this rapid growth, a rider’s mount must evolve alongside their skill set. We believe that transitioning through different horses is the most effective way to build a versatile, confident equestrian.

The Foundation Phase

For those starting their journey, we prioritize "teacher" mounts—steady, predictable partners valued for their patience and impeccable dispositions. These horses are the backbone of our program, providing the security a rider needs to master the basics.

Advancing the Partnership

As riders reach the 2'6" level and beyond, the focus shifts toward horses that balance a kind nature with high-level athleticism. To ensure these athletes remain at their peak performance, our policy requires that any horse jumping 2'6" or higher be fully leased or owned. This ensures a dedicated bond between horse and rider and allows us to carefully manage the horse’s workload for long-term health and success.
